Ragdoll Cats - History

What is known for sure is that the cat breed was founded in Riverside, California. An ordinary non-pedigree cat named Josephine is recorded as the foundation of the breed. This was a white, longhaired cat. The records state that the cats' temperament changed greatly after becoming an unfortunate victim of a road accident. Josephine became quiet, tame, and affectionate. The litter that Josephine produced after the road accident had the same temperament, which was very different from the litters that Josephine had produced before the accident.

The Ragdoll cat was developed from the combination of three feral cats. The Rag doll cat breed has been selectively bred over many years for such traits as large size, docility, and the cat's ability to go limp in the arms like a rag doll. The breeding program centered on Persians, Birmans, and Burmese.

Nowadays, Ragdoll cats remain a relatively rare breed. However, due to growing popularity of the breed, the number of these cats and their breeders has increased greatly. The breed's owners are fascinated by the temperament and beauty of Ragdoll cats.
